Date nights can include any genre of movie depending on what your significant other is into. However, a classic romantic evening requires a suitable date night movie- one that has themes of love, sacrifice, and youth, or simply causes your partner to latch onto you during the scariest parts of a horror film. The 80’s was a good year for classic and suitable movies to see on a date. Here are 5 classic 80’s movies that are perfect for such an occasion.

1. When Harry Met Sally

When Harry Met Sally is a film that begs to question if men and women can ever truly become friends without letting attraction get in the way and ruining it all. Harry and Sally meet in college and continue to bump into each other eventually becoming friends. As life takes its toll on them, their friendship becomes strained. While not amazingly romantic, this movie is cute and shows the many ways humans can show affection and love towards each other.

2. Princess Bride

This fantasy/comedy/fairy tale love story about a young woman and her true love is a classic with a loyal following. Based on a book, even the storyline includes a grandfather reading to his sick grandson a story about romance and true love with some sword fights in between. The lead is a swordfighter who must fight his way to his one true love.

3. Ghostbusters

Treading into comedy and minor horror, Ghostbusters almost singlehandedly created a new genre. A mixture of comedy and scary ghosts with major comedian power houses such as Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Rick Moranis as well as the ever talented Sigourney Weaver, proves that being scared doesn’t have to be so serious.

4. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Who has not wanted to skip school and go on an all day adventure? Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a story about Ferris, a boy who decides to skip school, go joy riding, and overall get into mischief all while convincing his principal he is legitimately out sick. A funny classic at the time, this movie continues to make audiences laugh as the years go by.

5. The Shining

Prepare to scream and latch onto your significant other during this horror film. The Shining has been scaring audiences since 1980 and continues to do so today. Based on a book, the main character Jack- a writer- decides to stay in an isolated hotel in Colorado hoping to gain some inspiration for his writing. As time goes on he becomes more and more diabolical leading to a murderous rampage.
