Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse in July 2018
By Matthew Engel
The lunar eclipse on July 27-28, 2018 was the second of three eclipses this summer. This eclipse was a full blood Moon Lunar Eclipse with Mars Retrograde conjunct (lined up) with it. Mars has to do with anger, self-expression, motivation, sexuality, creativity, and the energy that gets us moving. The Moon pertains to emotions, the psyche, intuition, the ego, the physical body, and self-identity. Both planets rule our emotional, creative and expressive needs. With these two planets energetically colliding, emotions have been running wild, sleep cycles have been off, reactions have been charged, anxiety has been heightened, thinking has been innovative, motivations have been enhanced, and the ego has been inflated. Eclipse cycles occur twice each year and they impact our lives for six to twelve months afterwards.
This is a time to take inventory about what you really need, how you want to direct your energies and how you need to self-assert. It’s also essential to be mindful about the risk of over-identifying with emotional reactions. The eclipse offers an opportunity to bring to the surface those needs and feelings that have been suppressed – articulating them with honest self-assertion and authenticity. We’re challenged to speak our authentic voices loudly and clearly enough to be heard, but without crushing others. I’m reminded of the classic book, Power Verses Force, by David M. Hawkins. When we speak in a tone of criticism, blame, shame, guilt and aggression, that energy is always coming from the part inside of us that experiences those feelings – whether or not we’re conscious of it. When we respond to our own feelings and needs with compassion, we are better equipped to express them in a similar tone.
Because eclipses cast a ripple effect for at least 6-12 months, arguments and fights that occur over the next four weeks (current Moon cycle) may have a lasting impact on relationships, jobs and other circumstances. Similarly, feelings that are aired with compassion, honesty and love have the potential to redirect relationships in a more authentic pathway.
Because Mercury is also retrograde, communication can have a tendency to get muddled. So if you find yourself feeling irritable, it’s probably a good idea to take some time to cool off and get clear about what’s really bugging you before you blast someone. Breath into your heart space, ask your Higher Self for support, be extra kind to yourself – and extra honest. That’s a good idea in general, but the impact of conversations this month may be more pronounced that usual. It’s a time when skeletons are likely to make their appearances and avoidance will be a more difficult coping mechanism to rely upon.
The silver lining of this cycle is that that’s calling us to get real with ourselves and others as well.
