Movie viewing is one of the most popular activities for Americans to partake in while dating, and for good reason. Generally, the evening begins with a good meal and ends with a lively discussion concerning the movie at hand. If you find yourself reaching for this tried and tested choice, then you must take a look at the following films to get you started on planning your next cinematic date:

This Academy Award winner will certainly be a winner for you and your date. As an Italian comedy-drama, you will laugh and you will cry. The story begins with a Jewish waiter who humorously wins the hand of a beautiful lady. Several years later, the man is sent to a Nazi concentration camp with his son. Trying to shield his son from the horrors, he makes up games for his young son. A beautiful tale of sacrifice and love, this is a must-see.

This 1939 historical romance is an epic classic. At four hours in length, this famous film is beautifully made with stunning costumes. The leading lady, Scarlett O’Hara manages to fire off some fantastic one-liners, and the romance between Rhett and Scarlet, played by Clark Gables and Vivien Leigh is enough to make any couple feel inspired.

The 1960s was a fascinating decade for American pop culture, and there is no better movie to reflect this than Breakfast At Tiffany’s. Produced after Truman Capote’s hit novel was published, Audrey Hepburn is stunning in her role as Holly Golightly. With a captivating soundtrack, excellent costumes and a quirky romance, you’ll want to add this to your list of date night movies, if only to catch a glimpse into the sixties.

This Russian masterpiece follows generations of families through an intertwining story set during the Russian Revolution. This dark tale of love, betrayal and Communism will have you reeling certainly. And you will not run out of things to discuss once you complete this epic film.

What is not to love about Leonardo DiCaprio and Christopher Walken pairing as a son/father duo? Check out this comedic drama for a fascinating period piece on the fifties and sixties. With some fantastic cameos, including Ellen Pompeo as a stewardess and Jennifer Garner as an escort, you won’t want to miss Amy Adams and Tom Hanks as well.

A Daphne Maurier classic, Alfred Hitchcock really manages a win in this suspense story. This black and white psychological thriller is certain to entertain with a stunning performance by Joan Fontaine.

Both Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix truly outdo themselves with singing roles in the Johnny Cash biopic. It’s a great historical piece with a fantastic soundtrack and a complicated love story to boot.
