When it comes to grilling, you’re literally playing with fire and it’s paramount to keep yourself and everyone else in your home protected. Safety precautions are a must especially if you’re a beginner. Wearing the right clothing and using the right tools are among the most important to keep in mind.
Here are the most common grilling safety mistakes and how you can avoid them while grilling:
Grilling anywhere that’s flat
Most grillers see a flat surface and they automatically set up their grill there. But according to experts, it is most ideal to set up your barbecue area over a dirt, steel or stone surface, that’s why back or front yards are your best bet at home. Just keep in mind to set it up that has at least a 5-foot perimeter of free space around your grill and not nearby any bush, tree or outdoor furniture.
The bigger flame, the better
When grilling using a charcoal grill, one common mistake that cooks make is cooking their food over big, hot flames. It is most important to be patient for the flames to become embers – this is when your food will cook perfectly. Do not cook anything over flames as not only will this increase the chance of flare-ups but your food will burn quickly, too.
The goal is to have perfectly grilled food, but your safety is also top priority. Protect your hands and arms by using gloves. Use long-handled grilling equipment such as tongs and brushes to avoid contact with the hot grates. Most importantly, keep a fire extinguisher nearby as a safety precaution.
A night time barbecue is fun – enjoying a hot grilled dish with a cold night breeze. But when cooking, don’t rely on the embers or a nearby light. Use a grill light! With sufficient light, you won’t be scrambling in the dark (possibly hurting or burning yourself in the process) while grilling and you will be able to see what you’re cooking clearly.
Cleaning too quickly
It’s efficient to clean up your grates and discard the used charcoals every after use, but don’t do it too quickly. Wait until the grates are completely cooled and when the embers have completely died down. Experts recommend waiting until the next morning to do the clean-up to avoid spontaneous fires in the garbage and to prevent hurting yourself scrubbing a still-hot grill.
