GREENHOUSE UPDATE

Now that we are a few weeks into fall, I find I am concentrating on other things than cooling the greenhouse, even though the temperatures are briefly in the mid to upper 90s. The overall temperatures are a far cry from the triple digits of the summer months.

The new challenge is now plant predators like white flies and what ever else is sort of nibbling on seedling leaves. I am using an organic non-toxic method of irradiating these insects, especially whiteflies. The little critters are common in greenhouses, especially around our leafy vegetables.

Another issue that we encountered, even early in the summer, is lime deposits from hard water from the misting system. I’ve learned that a mixture of vinegar and water in a spray bottle does really well. We also need to put a filter on the line to the greenhouse to reduce the water deposits.

Until the next update.
