NASA has apparently picked the perfect site for the upcoming landing of Mars InSight, a mission managed by NASA and JPL.
On November 26, 2018, after a 205 day journey, Insight will touch down on the Elysium Planitia, in the high plains near the Martin Equator just before 3pm EST. It is the Goldie Locks of landing sites, not too windy or too rocky.
According to NASA, InSight will unfurl its solar panels within a few hours after touchdown. Mission engineers and scientists will take their time assessing their “workspace” prior to deploying on the surface – about three months after landing – it will begin its scientific mission.
What is InSight’s mission? To study the deep interior of Mars, taking the planet’s vital signs – its pulse, temperature and reflexes by sensing and studying evidence buried far below the surface.
