Marine Mammal Rescue Day

Marine Mammal

The California State Senate declared April 27th Marine Mammal Rescue Day in 2017. It is an observance and awareness of how we impact our oceans and coastal areas, and highlights our responsibility for its preservation.

(Days of the Year) Spring is the height of animal rescue season due to illness and malnutrition for the west coast. Marine mammal rescue organization along the Pacific coast gear up for the busy Pinnipedia season as early as mid-January when Northern Elephant Seals start being born. Next, comes pupping season for Harbor Seal and Sea Lion pups start being born mid to late June. The Pacific coast also is home to Northern Fur Seals and Guadalupe Fur Seal. And of course the Sea Otter.

Cetaceans also need help from illness and injury. Polluted waters, marine debris, and illegal fishing gear harm and kill all manner of aquatic life.

Being good stewards of the planet should include the biggest part of it, the ocean and its inhabitants. The actions (and inaction) of humans have polluted and toxified the ocean. Overall climate change has warmed the oceans and altered the patterns were fish swim. Young marine mammals are frequently not strong enough to go far and deep enough to go after the fish they need. Illegal fishing gear, pollution, and litter hurt all manner of aquatic life.
