The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park will celebrate a long-awaited opening on Friday, August 6, 2021 with an Inaugural Gala and Concert. The itinerary is filled with a memorable evening including dinner crafted by celebrity chef, Richard Blais, and performances by The San Diego Symphony.

The Rady Shell

The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park is designed by San Diego architecture firm, Tucker Sadler Architects, led by CEO and Design Principal, Greg Mueller and was the architect of record for this state-of-the-art landmark. Working together with Tucker Sadler was London-based firm, Soundforms who expanded their award-winning 2012 mobile acoustic performance shell (MAPS) to accommodate a large orchestra with chorus and soloists, and to be a permanent structure on the Embarcadero Marina Park South site.

The $85 million Rady Shell at Jacobs Park is a collaboration between the San Diego Symphony and San Diego Unified Port District, providing a long-term land lease that included public park improvements and the permanent performance structure to hold the San Diego Symphony and other events. The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park was unanimously approved by the California Coastal Commission and is the first of its kind on the West Coast.

The Rady Shell features a structure that reaches a height of 57 feet and a width of 92 feet at the front of the stage. A key partner in the creation of the performance shell is Australia-based Fabritecture, which developed and oversaw the technical design, fabrication, and installation of the tensile structure and the backstage support spaces. The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park sits on 3.7 acres and provides a 4,800 square-foot stage designed with highly advanced acoustical and lighting systems. The 1.25-acre audience area provides seating capacity for 10,000 guests.

In addition to the performance shell, the 10.8-acre public park transformative improvements include public restrooms, basketball courts, public outdoor picnic area and pavilions, lawn event space for public use, improved ADA access areas, park area, and perimeter public walkways. The lawn area of The Shell will be open on non-event days for the community to enjoy, and the enhanced adjacent park will be open year-round.

“Local San Diegans and visitors to San Diego will be able to attend world-class music performances by The San Diego Symphony and other events when the San Diego Symphony isn’t performing. The Rady Shell with state-of-the-art acoustic technology, lighting effects, and architectural design elements as well as the San Diego Bay as a backdrop creates a unique concert experience,” said Greg Mueller.
