Garrett Augustus Morgan was an African-American inventor and community leader. He invented parts for sewing machines, hair care products, and a version of the modern traffic signal which he patented and sold to GE. He is also known for his publicized rescue of miners near Lake Erie in 1916 using his safety hood.
