No Sweethearts This Year

We all know them. Those pastel heart shaped chalky confections with messages like, Hug Me,โ€ and Cutie Pie.โ€ The iconic holiday candy, which shares a similar popularity as the candy canes to its respective holiday, Sweetheart Conversation Hearts will not be available for Valentineโ€™s Day 2019.

Sweethearts (also known as conversation hearts) are small heart-shaped sugar candies sold around Valentine’s Day. Each heart is printed with a message such as “Be Mine”, “Kiss Me”, “Call Me”, “Let’s Get Busy”, or “Miss You”. Sweethearts were made by the New England Confectionery Company, or Necco, previously also made by the Stark Candy Company. Necco manufactured nearly 8 billion Sweethearts per year. A similar type of candy is sold in the UK under the name Love Hearts. (wikipedia)

After 150 years of producing the famous candies, the New England Confectionery Company, (Necco) have gone bankrupt and closed its doors.

The rights to the candy were acquired by Spangler Candy Company in September 2018, and after all is said and done, it takes at least 11 months set up and produce the product, meaning that it wonโ€™t be until just before Valentineโ€™s Day 2020 when the product is available.

People are turning to alternative venues to purchase remaining product, like through eBay or Prime, or finding similar product, like Brachโ€™s Tiny Conversation Hearts Candy.
