On September 13, 2021, many observers, including armature astronomers around the globe, were surprised when they witnessed what was apparently an object hitting Jupiter.
Space debris hitting Jupiter happens regularly, but it is rare for amateur astronomers to catch one in the act. A Brazilian amature astronomer seemingly captured a video of one of those strikes.
Jupiter, with its strong gravitational pull, is the largest planet in our solar system. The planet orbits close to the asteroid belt and receives regular strikes by asteroids and other natural objects that create visible scars on the clouds of the planet.
In 1994, fragments of the Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 crashed into Jupiter, creating massive scars in the planet’s thick atmosphere that lasted for months.
In 2009, Jupiter was hit by another object which turned out to be an asteroid.
