Easter

EveryBUNNY loves #Easter!

Easter,ย also calledย Paschaย (Aramaic,ย Greek,ย Latin) orย Resurrection Sunday,ย is aย Christian festivalย and culturalย holidayย commemorating theย resurrection of Jesusย from the dead, described in theย New Testamentย as having occurred on the third day of hisย burialย followingย his crucifixionย by theย Romansย atย Calvaryย c.ย 30 AD.ย It is the culmination of theย Passion of Jesus, preceded byย Lentย (orย Great Lent), a 40-day period ofย fasting,ย prayer, andย penance.

Mostย Christiansย refer to the week before Easter asย Holy Week, which in Western Christianity begins onย Palm Sundayย (marking the entrance of Jesus in Jerusalem), includesย Spy Wednesdayย (on which the betrayal of Jesus is mourned),ย and contains the days of theย Easter Triduumย includingย Maundy Thursday, commemorating theย Maundyย andย Last Supper,ย as well asย Good Friday, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus.ย In Eastern Christianity, the same days and events are commemorated with the names of days all starting with “Holy” or “Holy and Great;” and Easter itself might be called “Great and Holy Pascha”, “Easter Sunday,” “Pascha” or “Sunday of Pascha.” Inย Western Christianity,ย Eastertide, or the Easter Season, begins on Easter Sunday and lasts seven weeks, ending with the coming of the 50th day,ย Pentecost Sunday. Inย Eastern Christianity, the Paschal season ends with Pentecost as well, but the leave-taking of the Great Feast of Pascha is on the 39th day, the day before theย Feast of the Ascension.

Easter and its related holidays areย moveable feasts, not falling on a fixed date;ย its dateย is computed based on aย lunisolar calendarย (solar year plus Moon phase) similar to theย Hebrew calendar. Theย First Council of Nicaeaย (325) established only two rules, namely independence from the Hebrew calendar and worldwide uniformity. No details for the computation were specified; these were worked out in practice, a process that took centuries and generated a number ofย controversies. It has come to be the first Sunday after theย ecclesiastical full moonย that occurs on or soonest after 21 March.ย Even if calculated on the basis of the more accurate Gregorian calendar, the date of that full moon sometimes differs from that of the astronomical first full moon after theย March equinox.

Easter is linked to the Jewishย Passoverย by its name (Hebrew:ย ืคึถึผืกึทื—ย pesach,ย Aramaic:ย ืคึธึผืกื—ึธืย paschaย are the basis of the term Pascha), by its origin (according to theย synoptic Gospels, both the crucifixion and the resurrection took place during the Passover)ย and by much of its symbolism, as well as by its position in the calendar. In most European languages the feast is called by the words for passover in those languages; and in the older English versions of the Bible the term Easter was the term used to translate Passover.

Easter customsย vary across theย Christian world, and includeย sunrise services, midnight vigils, exclamations and exchanges ofย Paschal greetings,ย clipping the churchย (England),ย decoration and the communal breaking ofย Easter eggsย (a symbol of theย empty tomb).ย Theย Easter lily, a symbol of the resurrection in Western Christianity,ย traditionally decorates theย chancelย area ofย churchesย on this day and for the rest of Eastertide.ย Additional customs that have become associated with Easter and are observed by both Christians and some non-Christians includeย Easter parades, communal dancing (Eastern Europe), theย Easter Bunnyย andย egg hunting.ย There are also traditionalย Easter foodsย that vary by region and culture.
